Major Writing Room Change Hits ‘Beyond the Gates’ as Emmy Winner Departs
The Beyond The Gates writers’ room is going to be looking a bit different come Season 2, as a Daytime Emmy-winning writer is stepping away from the series.
Breakdown writer Ron Carlivati took to his Instagram story to make the announcement. The writer said, “A quick career update from me: I recently wrapped my stint as a writer on Beyond the Gates, the hot new soap opera on CBS created by the incomparable Michele Val Jean, When Michele called last August and asked me to join her team, I jumped at the chance to be a part of the launch of this groundbreaking and historic show.
After recently finishing Season One (200 episodes!), I decided to leave to pursue other projects, but I am beyond proud of what we accomplished and beyond grateful to Michele and to Executive Producer Sheila Ducksworth for this extraordinary opportunity. Wishing them and everyone at Beyond the Gates a long and successful run.”
Prior to joining the team of Beyond the Gates, Carlivati began his writing career as a writer’s assistant on the ABC soap opera One Life To Live in 1996. He then worked his way up the ladder to Script Writer in 1998, Breakdown writer in 2001, until becoming co-head writer and eventually head writer in 2007, where he remained until the series finale.
For his work on One Life to Live, Carlivati won a Daytime Emmy in 2008.
After the cancellation of One Life to Live, Carlivati moved to the last remaining ABC soap opera General Hospital where he was head writer from 2012-2015. During this time his work was awarded three consecutive Writers Guild of America Awards (2014 to 2016). From there Carlivati moved to Days of Our Lives where he won an additional Daytime Emmy during his head writing stint from 2017 to 2025.
Carlivati joined the Beyond the Gates writing team where he served as a breakdown writer. Carlivati’s contributions to the hit CBS soap opera are expected to air throughout the year.
Gates as a soap opera that is “set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States; a posh gated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home.
At the center of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered.
And those who live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where our characters live, love, work and play. Those who have “made it” and those who haven’t are all trying to navigate life … and some with more grace than others.“
Beyond The Gates, developed and produced by CBS Studios / NAACP venture in partnership with P&G Studios, a division of Procter and Gamble, is the ground-breaking first hour long black soap opera to premiere in daytime. The creation is the brainchild of award-winning showrunner Michele Val Jean and Sheila Ducksworth, and the first new soap opera to premiere since NBC debuted Passions back in 1999.
