NEED TO KNOW

  • Josh Duggar told his parents they needed to accept responsibility for the roles they played in his fall from grace following his conviction for possessing child sexual abuse materials
  • “[Y]ou don’t understand how you have hurt me and you keep trying to make yourselves ‘look good’ instead of trying to be concerned about your responses to my charges or anything else in my life,” Josh wrote in a text obtained by PEOPLE
  • He also told his mother: “[T]he public statements and pr work to save shows and public images i feel were placed above family relationships … and still are to this day”

Josh Duggar told his mother Michelle Duggar that both she and his father Jim Bob Duggar needed to accept responsibility for the roles they played in his fall from grace in a series of angry text messages obtained by PEOPLE.

“[I] am very disappointed. I feel like you just don’t receive criticism or take admission for your own actions THAT HAVE DIRECTLY AFFECTED (sic) MY LIFE, including in this situation,” Josh wrote in a message sent a little over a week after he was sentenced to 151 months in prison following his conviction for receiving and possessing child sexual abuse materials (CSAM).

Josh said in multiple messages to his mother that he was “innocent” of this crime, and it was another man who worked at the used car dealership with him who had downloaded the CSAM images and videos to his computer.

In that message sent to his mother following his sentencing, he continued: “I AM NOT BLAMING YOUR FOR THE SITUATION, BUT YOU ARE BLAMING ME – AND YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW THE TRUTH – YOU SAID THAT YOURSELF TODAY.”

Josh again proclaimed his innocence and said that whether or not his parents believe him should have no impact on the way they treat him.

“I just think you don’t get it. you don’t understand how you have hurt me and you keep trying to make yourselves ‘look good’ instead of trying to be concerned about your responses to my charges or anything else in my life,” Josh wrote.

Josh made a similar comment in a message to his mother three months prior while discussing how difficult it was to be behind bars while the rest of his family was “out going and doing.”

He told his mother: “[T]he public statements and pr work to save shows and public images i feel were placed above family relationships … and still are to this day.”

Josh said that his mother appeared to “worry about pr more than anything else sometimes.” He also claimed that he was “not trying to shift blame for anything” before asking her to “consider your role and change so that other children are not in the same situations later.”

Two days later, Josh voiced his frustration again in a text and asked his mother if what he viewed as her unfair treatment is “maybe because of [her] own guilt?”

Michelle does not address these issues in her responses to Josh, but instead tells him she loves him or passes along messages of support from others.

This comes as he recently had two months added to his federal prison sentence and is now scheduled to be released from FCI Seagoville in Texas on Feb. 2, 2033.

That marked the third time Josh’s prison sentence had been extended from his initial release date of August 2032.
